23rd Annual Bali Arts Festival

The theme of Bali Arts Festival XXIII - 2001 is Rwabhineda (the opposing forces in the universe which maintain balance and harmony). Rwabhineda is the law of the universe, and as such must be understood and respected. In the lontar leaf manuscript “Jnana Sidhanta” is described using the holy characters ‘ang’ and ‘ah’, which correspond to the earth and the sky respectively. The message contained in this theme is the maintenance of harmony in the universe.

Since 1979 the Bali Arts Festival has striven to include five main activities: parades, performances, competitions, exhibitions, workshops. These five elements are presented through various activities aimed at preserving Balinese culture.

Signaling the start of each Bali Arts Festival is the opening parade, in which the full gamut of Balinese artistic creativity is arrayed alongside visiting artists from abroad. The event, which is eagerly awaited by crowds of spectators, display Bali’s great artistic heritage in a single colorful event.

Performances are the central attractions at Bali Arts Festival, for it is at performances that the people are most entertained by Bali’s most famous artists.

The choice of material for performances always gives priority to rare art forms of high quality which at the same time after a range of aesthetic qualities that most fully represent the Balinese arts. Another crowd-puller at the Bali Arts Festival is the inclusion of performances from outside Bali and from abroad.

The Festival has throughout its history has seen thousands of artists pass through the doors of the Arts Centre in Denpasar, and more than 100 groups have appeared here. They come from various countries: Australia, Southeast Asia, Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Thailand, America and Europe, not forgetting the other Provinces in Indonesia.

Competitions are an attempt to increase creativity and to improve the capacity of the people to appreciate the arts programmed for each Bali Arts Festival. In this context the Gong Kebyar competitions takes pride of place, followed by Balinese Pop, Traditional Literature, Traditional Costume, Traditional Cuisine, Flower Arranging, Coconut Leaf Sculpting, etc.

These can be found in every nook and cranny of the Arts Centre grounds and building for the duration of the festival. Exhibitions are not only a platform on which to present new creations for artists and craftsmen, but also serve to promote in commercial sense, the creative production coming from Bali’s top craftsmen. Exhibitors, whether local or not, never fail to improve the quality of their work every year.

Workshop activities represent a platform on which experts can express their views and discuss matters of import to their respective fields: Literature, Dance, Traditional Music, Fine Art etc. It is hoped that these will in turn have an influence on the people and the artists of Bali, in line with the ethics, norms, and values prevailing amongst the Balinese people whose denominational majority are Hindu.

HINTS FOR TRAVELERS

The performance theaters may be hot, it is recommended that you wear light, comfortable clothing.

Telephones are located in the western part of the Ksirarnawa building and near exit.

Transport is usually available at the exit, but if you hire a bemo you will have to bargain hard. If you wish to call a metered taxi, or in the event of an emergency, these numbers should assist you: Emergency: 110, Ambulance: 118, Bali Taxi: 701111, Praja Taxi: 289090.

Toilets are conveniently located around the complex, but you will need to carry your own tissues as it is unlikely available.

Hundred of thousands of spectators make their way to Denpasar for the day to witness this event. The Arts Festival is a celebration of the people, their arts and beliefs. It embodies the spirit of their tenacious, vibrant culture and their dedication to the Gods. It is recommended that you dress properly when visiting this area. No bathing suites please, and cover your top with T-shirt (for ladies and gents).
